Who are the best quantum and delay expert firms in the UK and Irish construction markets?
Each year, we at Novus Resolve are instructed on behalf of clients either making or defending claims. As a result, our experts are pitted against other expert witnesses in all sorts of proceedings. Because of this exposure, we are often asked by the client or its lawyers if we know the opposing expert and what we think of them. There are also occasions where we would love to act but are conflicted from doing so because of previous or an ongoing relationships. When that happens, we sometimes get asked for recommendations on who to instruct.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of some firms and individuals that we have first hand experience of that have a solid reputation for providing expert services to the construction and engineering industry in the UK.
1. C-Sense Planning
Having been established in 2017 in Glasgow, C-Sense Planning provides excellent forensic delay analysis and project planning services throughout the UK and in the Far East with a particular emphasis on Hong Kong. Its founder Eddie Sung has a background in civil engineering so critically, he understands construction which is where some planners in our experience fall down. With familial ties to Hong Kong and China, he is a natural fit for the Far East market as well as the UK.
2. Avalon DRS
A partnership based out of London, Avalon employs experienced professionals dealing in both quantum and delay. A younger partner at the team, George McGarry, is one to watch out for in the future.
3. Alvarez and Marsal
Although well-established internationally and in other disciplines, A&M has made a return to the UK market after several years of absence, now headed up by the excellent Andrew Drennan, a quantum expert of great temperament and experience. A&M offer both quantum and delay services.
4. Secretariat
Its UK practice is headed by the internationally renowned Liam Holder who needs little introduction. Working closely with Liam is Gareth McDermott who has been making a name for himself as an accomplished quantum expert in recent years since joining in 2020. Gareth’s practice straddles both sides of the Irish Sea and beyond. This won’t be the last time we mention Secretariat in this space.
5. JS Held
As with A&M, JS Held (formerly Arcadis Contract Solutions) operate internationally but their quantum and delay offerings are backboned by its UK based team headed up by the renowned expert and adjudicator, Gary Kitt.
6. Independent practitioners
On delay, Dr Alan Whaley has recently left JS Held to set up his own practice. Alan combines his on site carpentry training with serious academic and professional experience which now sees him lecturing at the University of Salford. He comes with a reputation far beyond his years.
For quantum, Danny Large keeps under the radar but his name is well established and he is a go to expert for technically challenging and complex disputes.
Conclusion
So there are five companies and some names to consider if you are looking for quantum and delay experts based out of the UK. We hope you find this helpful.
